About the program
The Settlement Program is a Community Development Program funded by the Department Social Services (DSS). Jesuit Social Services collaborates with newly arrived communities (people who migrated to Australia in the last 5 years), and other local community organisations and services to implement this project from our site in Sunshine. The program seeks to support the settlement of new and emerging communities through general casework, group information sessions and referral to mainstream services and activities, using a community development and capacity building approach.
About the role
The key objectives of this position are:

- Providing settlement related information, advice, advocacy and referral services to individuals and their families due to issues arising from their settlement experience.
- To understand and appreciate the skills and experiences newly arrived individuals, families and communities already possess.
- Providing services in ways that develop self-esteem, life skills and interests and promote pathways to education, training and employment.
- Assist people to understand and navigate service systems and to access mainstream services.

Candidate Requirements
This role will suit a candidate with the following skills and experience:
- Demonstrated experience in community development, welfare, social work, casework, housing, education or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and families from newly arrived communities and proactively advocate for positive participant outcomes.
- Capacity to deliver foundation-level community-based training (desirable).
- Demonstrated awareness of culturally competent practice and the complexity of needs experienced by newly arrived migrants.
- Knowledge of the services and resources available to newly arrived migrants particularly within the community, education and employment sectors.
- Experience in using data recording systems as well as general computer skills, outlook calendar and shared drives.
- Ability to work well in a team and with minimal supervision.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to speak a newly arrived community language (desirable).
- Capacity to fulfil reporting and administrative requirements associated with the position.
- Understanding and sympathy with the mission and ethos of Jesuit Social Services
- Valid Working with Children Check card.
- Successful Police Check to be conducted by Jesuit Social Services prior to commencement
